In the news of October 2017 I gave a teaser of a road sign showing Skirme. In fact, I had photoshoped it slightly - the full name is shown below.

It's such an unusual name and close to one of the Skyrme variants found in earlier centuries, that I wondered if there was a connection. However, there are no early records of Skirmes in this vicinity (the nearest are probably the 16th and 17th century Skirmes of Lincolnshire and Kent). The dictionary of English Place Names (ed. David Mills, Oxford University Press 2011) gives this derivation:
- La Skiremote (c. 1370) - meeting place of the Shire Court.
So there you have it - no connection with the Skirme family at all, but interesting none the less.
